Footwear aficionados wear and collect shoes nobody else has, or at least as few people as possible, anyway. Sneakerheads crave their own identity and are willing to queue outside specialist shops all night to prove it. The sneakerhead culture is thought to have started in New York City with the rise of hip hop. Soon the search was on for original shoes and shoe companies encouraged the individualist impulse and obliged by selling limited-edition and custom-made sneakers. By deliberately offering limited supply of high-end shoes companies fueled the growth of sneakerhead culture. In turn this made amassing collectable footwear a blue chip investment. Now sneakerheads are everywhere going to extremes for a pair of exclusive kicks.
