Dead rock stars and their shoes
Dr Martens' decision to use images of dead rock stars to promote their footwear has caused quite a controversy with several relatives of public figures expressing their disgust and concerns. The footwear giant engaged advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi to devise a new sales promotion which featured Kurt Cobain, Joey (Ramone) Leigh, Joe Strummer and Sid Viscious, wearing Dr Marten‘s footwear. Neither Courtney Love (widow of Curt Cobain) or Mickey Leigh (Joey’s brother and executor of his estate) were asked prior permission to use the images of the former celebrities, nor were the estates offered payment. Under these circumstances both parties would not have given approval. Mickey Leigh is further insistent that his brother Joey, never wore Dr Marten boots when alive and to infer otherwise for commercial reasons, would not be appropriate. Once these objections were lodged Dr Martens withdrew the promotion and apologised for any offence that had been caused by the publication of images showing dead rock icons wearing Dr Martens boots. Meantime AirWair Ltd., the company behind Dr. Martens footwear terminated their contract with Saatchi & Saatchi.
