Ray Bolger:You make me feel like dancing
Just caught the Christmas showing of “The Wizard of Oz” and cannot help but marvel at the 1939 production. What has now become standard for all major productions of quality is the film is layered and each time it is seen you, the audience are made aware of another level of meaning. The Scarecrow played by Ray Bolger is absolutely superb. Ray was an established theatre performer before the movie and went on to star in “Where’s Charley?” on Broadway a decade later. The show ran for two years before travelling across the US. Apparently the dancing comedian wore out 36 pairs of dancing shoes (22 pairs of soft shoes and 14 pairs of tap shoes) in his starring role.
