Santiagos no more
Santiagos were colorful canvas-and-rubber shoes made in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic by Keen . The company have stopped making the shoes and a according to a spokesperson for the company this was due to a host of different reasons but mainly because of the inferior quality of the product. Keen started making simple sandals less than a decade ago but are now a company with $200 million a year in sales. The socially responsible Keen has created a vegan shoe and a glue-less shoe box from recycled material. Keen did plan to donate a portion of Santiago sales to their HybridLife Hope Fund, which works with Kiva. Due to the change in production the company will donate $5 to the fund for every pair of Keen footwear sold between May 10 and June 10. The goal is $100,000.
