Australian podiatrists per head of population

According to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and National Boards’ 2010-2011 annual report, there were 3,461 podiatrists registered to practise in Australia. That is approximately one (1) podiatrist to 6575.4 people. The demographic breakdown was 64.3% of the foot professionals were aged between 25 and 44 years, with 279 podiatrists (8.06% ) aged between 20 and 24; and 49 (1.41% ) over 80. Over half the profression were females (57%). In terms of scope of practice 42 podiatrist (1.21% ) have registration which allows them access to scheduled medicines; and 20 (0.57% ) podiatrists were registered to practice foot surgery. The vast majority of Australian podiatrists work in Victoria (31.3%) with NSW a close second at 26.6% of the work force. 16.9% of the profession work in Queensland and 10% can be found in South Australia and Western Australia. When compared to the Australian Bureau of Statistic for 2010 for People aged 65 years and over, the following table emerges.
