Shoes muse school students and Old Masters
A common theme in many junior and middle schools is to use shoes as a focal point for art and creative writing. School assignments include students using old shoes to make paper maché sculptures. For example an old shoe is used as an armature or framework to support a medium such as clay in creative modelling. Books like "Cinderella's Revenge" by Samuele Mazza are used to give the class ideas for their projects. Groups are encouraged to explore ideas through brainstorming and then using media of their own choosing including mixed media, collage, Papier Maché , drawing, painting, graffiti, construction and carving, design make their artifacts. An added attraction to the creative exercise is the completed works form the basis for work in progress exhibitions. Depending on the level of student determines what other exercises can be done such as creative writing. Footwear not only holds a fascination for children many artists have paited and sculted footwear throught history. These include Vincent Van Gogh, and Andy Warhol.
