The shoes of the Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama likes to wear shies made in the US. In the 1980s, Senator George Mitchell gave the Dalai Lama a pair of Dexter Shoes. Since then, His Holiness has worn them around the world, even having them re-soled three times.
Now, the shoes have found a permanent home at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care. Alfond has been awarded the Dalai Lama Foundation's Compassion in Action award for his philanthropic work. Harold Alfond was the founder of the Dexter Shoe Company in 1956. The Dalai Lama's shoes will be on display permanently at the Center for Cancer Care in Augusta, along with a photograph of the shoes. The exhibit is part of a larger project, called The Missing Peace Project, cosponsered by the Dalai Lama Foundation and the Committee of 100 for Tibet.
