Australian Podiatry Council: Socking it to Diabetes
October is Australian Foot Health Month 2012 and this years’ campaign is Socking it to Diabetes. Whilst hoping to generally iprove foot heath awareness among diabetics the camoaign organisers are hoping to significantly reduce the appalling toll levied by complications and amputations. Every week, 85 Australians lose their toes, feet or even their legs because of diabetes complications. The Australian Podiatry Council has used specially commissioned ‘Silly Socks’(under written by Underworks) to highlight the importance of foot self-care. Underworks produce All Day Socks which is endorsed by Diabetes Australia and recommended by APodC. Practitoners are encouraged to wear Silly Socks throughout the campaign and use them to open a conversation with diabetic patients about the importance of good foot health care. Members of the Australian podiatry professional association are encouraged to lobby their Federal MP urging more Medicare-funded podiatry visits per year for people with diabetes.
