Cosmetic foot surgery: Narcissistic compulsion?
Seems the number of women requesting cosmetic foot procedures including shortening toes, adding collagen to heels and even removing pinkie toes to fit into those sky-high stilettos has not abated. Despite the real risk of post surgical complications such as adverse anesthesia reactions and chronic pain years after the procedure is done demand continues. Experts warn painful scars, prolonged swelling and post-operative infections are all possible and adverse complications of injecting collagen into the sole of the foot for added cushioning may include a shift leading to a lifetime of foot discomfort.
Love Me was compiled by photographer, Zed Nelsonand over five years he documented extreme measures undertaken in the quest for cosmetic perfection. According to the author plastic surgeons are particularly potent emblems of the global obsession with beauty. Nelson’s unsettling images of plastic surgeons, beauty queens and bodybuilders underscore the seduction of narcissistic compulsion. Love me , Contrasto; Ill edition (October 1, 2009).
