Coins found in an old shoe under the floor boards

During excavations behind the former City Hall in Rotterdam archeologists found a 16th century shoe stuffed with 477 silver coins. Most of the coins date from, 1472 to 1592 and are Netherlands nickels, half pennies and double nickels. There are also English and Spanish pieces. The face value is 50 guilders which today would be worth many thousand euros. It is quite rare to find a shoe full of money and is thought to have been either a prudent precaution against burglary or a miser’s hoard. The shoe leather is still in good condition.
