The Sourtoe Cocktail
,br> The Sourtoe Cocktail has been a tradition at the Downtown Hotel bar in Dawson City, Yukon, since 1973, when, as the story goes, a local named Captain Dick found an amputated toe preserved in a jar. The toe was ceremonially placed in a drink and those wishing to join the club had to touch it with their lips but not swallow or ingest the toe. The first toe lasted until 1980, when a man going for his thirteenth Sourtoe swallowed it by mistake. Recently another contender repeated the feat (excuse the pun) and drowned the floating digit in his whiskey shot. After a beer chaser he happily paid the $500 fine for swallowing the toe. The fine stands for anyone taking the toe into the mouth; biting, chewing, or swallowing the digit. A substitute toe has now been found and the challenge continues. The bar sells anywhere from 30 to 50 Sourtoe Cocktails a night. Patrons are encouraged to bequeath their toes and anyone wishing to donate a toe can contact the hotel.
