A La Recherche Du Shoe Perdu

Recently a collection of Andy Warhol shoe prints, titled A La Recherche Du Shoe Perdu, went for auction at Sotheby’s in the United Kingdom. The portfolio comprised of 16 framed offset lithographs (15 of which have been hand-colored) featuring Warhol shoe designs. Each shoe print is annotated with text written by poet Ralph Pomeroy with the lettering by Julia Warhol, Warhol’s mother. The illustrations were originally created in 1955, during Warhol’s time working as a commercial artist for shoe company I. Miller. Many of his works from this period were showcased in The New York Times, when I. Miller regularly took out advertisements in the paper’s Sunday edition. The estimated sale price was between 100,000 and 150,000 GBP. The lot sold for 293,000 GBP.
