The prohibitive cost of polydactylism

A child in Hong Hong, was born with 15 fingers, 16 toes, and two palms, with no thumbs on either hand. Polydactylism, is a genetic condition usually inherited from the mother. The child’s mother has six fingers and toes. As the child grows surgeons will have to construct working opposable thumbs, essential for providing precision grip. The cost of the complex operations is estimated at $40,000 and the family have raised $8000 in online donations. Sadly, as reported by CNN the family have now been forced to stop crowdfunding because of "mixed comments" they received about asking for cash on the internet. The family are now reportedly back in their hometown of Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, in the hope of finding local donors.
